UIB Researcher Among 18 International Scientists to Supervise LISA Space Mission

Dr. Anna Heffernan, a researcher from the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB), has been selected by the European Space Agency (ESA) to join the scientific team of the LISA space mission, which aims to launch the first space-based gravitational wave observatory.

Dr. Sascha Husa will co-chair two working groups focused on decoding wave signals and establishing technical definitions for the development of LISA’s software.

Dr. Heffernan, part of UIB’s Gravitational Physics: Theory and Observation group (GRAVITY), is one of 11 European scientists chosen by ESA, alongside six American scientists selected by NASA and one scientist chosen by the LISA Consortium. This global collaboration includes over 1,800 scientists.

Dr. Heffernan is the only researcher from a Spanish institution on this committee for the next three years. She has played a significant role in the LISA mission, co-directing the team responsible for developing waveform templates for signal analysis and being a part of the internal communication management group. In November 2023, she was named a member of the LISA Consortium Constituent Council.
