October 20, 2023 Tests conducted at CERN for the HERD prototype for high-energy cosmic radiation detectionOver the months of September and October 2023, the High-Energy Cosmic Radiation Detection (HERD) prototype underwent testing at CERN, both at the Proton Synchrotron (PS) and the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS). IFAE played a crucial role in developing some of its components, promising new perspectives in the exploration of fundamental cosmic phenomena.Leer más →
October 18, 2023 The largest mapping of the Cosmos beginsThe Observatorio Astrofísico de Javalambre (OAJ) has started to take the first data from the Javalambre Physics of the Accelerating Universe Astrophysical Survey (J-PAS), a major and unprecedented three-dimensional mapping of the cosmos, which is planned to be carried out during the current decade.Leer más →
October 10, 2023 Gaia mission identifies half a million new stars in Omega Centauri clusterHalf a million new stars in Omega Centauri — the largest and most massive star cluster in our galaxy, the Milky Way — 380 quasars seen through gravitational lenses and the defined position of more than 150,000 asteroids within the solar system. These are some of the exceptional advances announced today by the Gaia mission, the European Space Agency's (ESA) flagship project to detail the stellar mapping of our galaxy and broaden the global perspective of the cosmos around us.Leer más →
August 24, 2023 Astronomers from the Universitat de València show first detailed image of a radiation belt outside our solar systemAstronomers from the Universitat de València captured the detailed image of the first radiation belt detected around a brown dwarf outside our solar system. The image, taken last January and now published in the Science journal, evokes the well-known belts of Earth and Jupiter, reveals a magnetic field ten times greater than that of the largest planet in the solar system, and unlocks new secrets of these ultracool substellar objects of very low mass and very powerful radiation.Leer más →
June 15, 2023 IFAE Delivers First HGTD Modules to CERNThe ATLAS Pixel group has been working on the development of new silicon detector technologies for the High Luminosity LHC upgrade. The group is set to make important contributions to the HGTD project which is critical for the ATLAS detector performance in the forward region. In the last year the first prototype modules were fully fabricated in the IFAE clean rooms, including the critical bump bonding step which was carried out in-house. These modules were delivered to CERN for the HGTD demonstrator program.Leer más →
